Lindsay Davenport reveals what she has already told Jessica Pegula about Wimbledon and the US Open this year

Jessica Pegula is enjoying another superb season on the WTA Tour, having just clinched her second title at the Charleston Open.

Coco Gauff congratulated Pegula on winning the Charleston Open earlier this month, where she beat fellow American Sofia Kenin in the final.

Pegula has since overtaken Gauff in the WTA rankings since then, with the former now in third and the latter in fourth.

Maria Sakkari would like to be coached by Pegula, who has now continued her strong form into the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix.

She is into the quarter-finals of the WTA 500 event in Stuttgart, with Ekaterina Alexandrova up next for the third seed.

Jessica Pegula told there is ‘no reason’ why she can’t win Wimbledon or the US Open

The American beat Magdalena Frech 6-1, 6-1 in the second round in Germany after being handed a bye in the first.

And her compatriot and former world number one Lindsay Davenport has now assessed Pegula as the clay season roars on.

“It’s interesting because I really thought Australia was going to be really great for her,” Davenport told Tennis Channel’s Second Serve.

“Coming off the US Open, where she was able to get to the final. Those conditions in Australia are really great for her in terms of fast courts and balls can skip through the court and she just didn’t play her best tennis there.

“I was curious how she would come back and then to see her in the Spring is just pretty awesome. Last year it was Danielle Collins, this year it was Jess being able to navigate Miami until [Aryna] Sabalenka and then picking it up in Charleston.

“I know the serve is something she has been working on, trying to get it to be more of a weapon, looking to get a free point or two in her service games.

“Shot for shot she hits the ball as clean as anyone out there. Learning to use the drop shot has been great.

“I also just think that the belief that finally getting past the quarter-finals of a slam, I think that has really helped her.

“Indoor clay is good for her, Roland Garros is probably going to be the most difficult for her slam wise, with how she produces her shots but I have told her there is no reason why you cannot win Wimbledon or the US Open. I love her game and how she hits her shots and I hope she gets another chance of winning that major.”

Pegula remains behind Sabalenka and Iga Swiatek in the WTA rankings, but she is undoubtedly one of the most in-form players heading into the French Open.

Along with Charleston, she has emerged victorious at Austin this season, and currently boasts a 25-6 win-loss record.

Pegula also occupies her career-high ranking, but perhaps Grand Slam success will now be on her agend.

The 31-year-old has reached the quarter-finals of all four major tournaments, going furthest at the 2024 US Open, where she lost the final to Sabalenka.
