Grigor Dimitrov was left heartbroken at Wimbledon after he was forced to retire from his fourth round match against Jannik Sinner.

Dimitrov has dealt with many injury struggles this year, but appeared to have overcome them in time for Wimbledon.

Despite being the big underdog, Dimitrov actually led Sinner by two sets to love before Wimbledon controversially shut the Centre Court roof.

Just over four games later, Dimitrov was forced to retire against Sinner due to a pectoral injury that left him in tears as he left Centre Court.

John McEnroe predicts how long Grigor Dimitrov could be out of action

There has been a big reaction to what has happened to Dimitrov, with many wishing the Bulgarian well following the heartbreaking scene on Centre Court.

This is the fifth consecutive major tournament that Dimitrov has been forced to retire with injury, but John McEnroe thinks this could potentially see him out of action for the rest of the 2025 season.

“That’s the fifth slam in a row that he has defeated during a match,” McEnroe said on BBC’s 6-Love-6 show. “He is setting records that you do not want to set.

“He has the perfect game plan with that slice that stayed really low. We don’t know the injury. If he tore his pec he is out for the rest of the year. He is 34. It’s not as old as it used to be, especially when you watch [Novak] Djokovic go out there and do his thing.”

Former world number four Tim Henman followed up on McEnroe’s comments, and praised Dimitrov for how he played against Sinner until the third set.

“I thought it was so good to see someone of Dimitrov’s skill-set to be out on Centre Court and show so many strings to his bow,” said Henman. “He was finishing the point coming forward, serving, hitting his spots, dominating with the forehand and using the slice.

“To be up two sets to love on Sinner, so close to the finishing line and for it to end in that fashion was so hard to watch.”

Patrick McEnroe reacts to Grigor Dimitrov’s heartbreaking retirement

The messages of support for Dimitrov have come flooding in after his retirement, including from John’s brother Patrick McEnroe.

Patrick was a Grand Slam champion winning doubles player and posted a video to social media in the initial aftermath of Dimitrov being unable to continue playing.

“Man…you know we forget sometimes how fragile this whole thing is,” Patrick McEnroe said on X (formerly known as Twitter).

“Sport, life and…man, tears. Grigor Dimitrov, absolutely brutal. Absolutely brutal. You just got to feel for the guy, oh man. Good on you Grigor.”

It is currently unclear what the diagnosis for Dimitrov’s injury is, with fans eagerly waiting for an update on the situation.
