Joao Fonseca has achieved something that has not been done since Rafael Nadal at the Monte Carlo Masters.

Fonseca had a difficult start to the 2026 season, but started to show more encouraging signs during the Sunshine Double, where he was only beaten by Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz.

The Brazilian teenager is dealing with a lot of expectations on his shoulders, as Fonseca is predicted to achieve big things in tennis in his career.

However, Fonseca appears to be taking it all in his stride after making history by winning his latest at the Monte Carlo Masters against Arthur Rinderknech.

Joao Fonseca is the youngest player to reach the last-16 in Monte Carlo since 2005

Fonseca beat Rinderknech 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 to back up his first round victory over Gabriel Diallo.

This means that Fonseca has reached the last-16 at an ATP 1000 tournament for just the second time in his career, on his debut appearance at the Monte Carlo Masters.

Fonseca is still only 19 years old, and as a result he has become the youngest player to reach the last-16 of the Monte Carlo Masters in 21 years.

At the 2005 tournament, 18-year-olds Nadal and Richard Gasquet also made it this far into the tournament.

Nadal had actually already achieved this feat two years prior, when he was just 16 years old.

Although Carlos Alcaraz has achieved many records in his career, he did not actually reach the last-16 at the Monte Carlo Masters until last year when he won the title at 21 years old.

What did Rafael Nadal and Richard Gasquet achieve at the 2005 Monte Carlo Masters?

Fonseca will be hoping to take inspiration from both Nadal and Gasquet, who did not stop at just the last-16 stage of the 2005 Monte Carlo Masters.

Gasquet had come through qualifying that year, before beating top seed Roger Federer and 10th seed Nikolay Davydenko to reach the semifinals.

This is where the Frenchman would lose to 11th seed and fellow 18-year-old Nadal, who would subsequently reach his first final at the Monte Carlo Masters that year.

Nadal beat Guillermo Coria 6-3, 6-1, 0-6, 7-5 in the final, as he claimed his maiden ATP 1000 title and first of 11 titles at the Monte Carlo Masters.

The Spaniard would go on to win his first Roland Garros title later that year, giving a good omen for Fonseca.

Which Grand Slam title would you like to see Joao Fonseca win?

While Fonseca may not be able to reach the heights of Nadal, he does now have an opportunity at the Monte Carlo Masters.

Following the shock 6-0, 6-0 defeat of seventh seed Daniil Medvedev, Fonseca will now play fellow unseeded player Matteo Berrettini for a place in his first Masters 1000 quarterfinal.
