Joao Fonseca’s Miami Open campaign came to an end in the second round after losing the highly anticipated matchup with Carlos Alcaraz.
In their maiden career clash, Alcaraz defeated Fonseca in straight sets, winning 6-4, 6-4 to advance to round three, where he will face Sebastian Korda.
The Brazilian has now faced the Spaniard and Jannik Sinner for the first time in the past two tournaments, having fallen to the Italian at the Indian Wells Open.

Fonseca was competitive against both of the ‘new two’ but failed to get a set off either of them.
After his loss to Alcaraz, the 19-year-old took to social media to send a message to his conqueror.

In a post on Instagram, Fonseca said: “It was an honour to share the court with you @carlitosalcarazz. I leave the US swing more confident in myself, happy and with my head held high.
“These matches motivate me to keep working. Thank you all for the constant support.”
Fonseca picked up four wins across the Sunshine Double, three of which were captured at the Indian Wells Open.

In ‘Tennis Paradise’, Fonseca defeated Raphael Collignon, Karen Khachanov and Tommy Paul to reach the fourth round, before ultimately falling to Sinner.
At the Miami Open, Fonseca won his first-round meeting with Fabian Marozsan to set up the clash with Alcaraz.

Though it was only his second-ever appearance at the Miami Open, Fonseca’s finish at the 2026 edition of the tournament was worse than in his first in 2025.
Fonseca reached the third round of the Miami Open last year, beating Learner Tien and Ugo Humbert before losing to Alex de Minaur.
With his second-round exit this time around, Fonseca will lose 20 ranking points following the conclusion of the Miami Open.
The decrease is not enough to see a shift in his live ranking at the moment, which is currently number 39 in the world.
Fonseca will need to be within the top 32 to be seeded for Roland Garros, set to get underway in May.
