Jim Courier thinks Novak Djokovic has just done something which could be ‘massive’ for his chances of winning the French Open

Novak Djokovic has started his pursuit of a record 25th Grand Slam in ideal fashion, winning his first round match in straight sets.

Djokovic has won a title in each of the last 20 seasons, with his latest success coming at the Geneva Open.

The 24-time Grand Slam champion clinched his 100th ATP Tour title in Switzerland, winning the final just before taking on the French Open.

And Djokovic has now continued his form into Roland Garros, having defeated Mackenzie McDonald 6-3, 6-3, 6-3 in round one.

Home favourite Corentin Moutet is his next opponent at the French Open, an event the Serbian has won on three occasions.

He entered the Grand Slam on the back of a first title of 2025, and indeed his first title since the gold medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Former world number one Jim Courier has now shared his take on how important the success could be for Roland Garros, saying on TNT Sports: “Novak has been a part of two final moments for his greatest rivals.

“He was part of Team Europe in London at the O2 when Federer said goodbye. He was here, all four of them were, incredible scenes – lucky for us as fans.

“But he is seeing his tennis mortality in those moments. It’s certainly in his mind. He knows he is much closer to the finish.

“He has some unfinished business though. He has gotten one thing he wanted with his 100th title which has been hovering over for a while, he got that on Saturday.

“And that is huge I think. I think that is massive for him because that settled down a lot of his doubts that he had the ability to finish and it certainly gets his aura back up in the locker room.

“But 25 [slams]. Can he do it in 2025? That has got to be the only reason he is still around. I know he is out and very active business-wise, he is going to have a long afterlife in the business world for sure, but he has some unfinished business and those deals can only get done four times a year.”

Courier was initially referencing a major farewell in tennis, with Rafael Nadal having just officially said goodbye to the French Open.

Djokovic was thanked by Nadal after attending his farewell ceremony, with the Spaniard having retired from the sport last year.

He won a record 14 French Open titles, and was joined on court by Djokovic and fellow legends Roger Federer and Andy Murray for a special farewell.

Nadal retired with 22 Grand Slam titles to his name, second only to the 24 of Djokovic and ahead of the 20 of Federer.

Asked when he thinks Djokovic will follow Nadal into retirement, Courier replied: “We are just playing a guessing game right now.

“He will play as long as it is viable, is what it feels to me. Having said that if 25 is done and dusted and there is no longer Margaret Court anywhere near him in the conversation, I don’t know.

“I don’t know because family is so critically important to him and his children are at that age where it’s really important for him to spend time with them.”
