The French Open is on the horizon and it will bring down the curtain on what has been an exciting European clay court season.

All eyes will turn to Paris for the clay court Grand Slam, the first edition of the event since the retirement of its greatest player, Rafael Nadal.

The Spaniard will be honoured in a special tribute on the opening day of the event and the crowd will have the opportunity to bid Nadal the ideal farewell.

As the French Open moves into a new era, it remains to be seen who will triumph and write their name into the history books alongside the 14-time champion.

While there does not seem to be a clear favourite for the men’s French Open title, two clear contenders stand out on the women’s side.

Aryna Sabalenka is the World number one and has claimed three titles this season from six finals, including the previous tournament, the Madrid Open.

The other is Iga Swiatek, who despite not winning a title since the 2024 French Open, is the defending champion who has won four of the last five championships in Paris.

Two-time French Open winner Jim Courier has since predicted his winner, and he went with Swiatek, who is going for a fourth successive title.

“She is still my favourite. As of today [yes, Iga Swiatek over Sabalenka],” the American told Tennis Channel. 

“Which as of today puts me in the minority. But I think there is magic for Iga when she hits those courts.”

Jim Courier says Coco Gauff has a better chance of winning Roland Garros than Mirra Andreeva

Coco Gauff is always a threat in each tournament she enters due to her elite athleticism and tenacity.

However, she has had a somewhat underwhelming season before reaching the Madrid Open final and with the exception of the United Cup, she has yet to win a title this season.

Mirra Andreeva on the other hand, broke into the top 10 for the first time and claimed successive WTA 1000 titles in Indian Wells and Dubai.

She has yet to reach her top form on clay, but Bet MGM’s odds have Andreeva as the third favourite to win the French Open, just ahead of Gauff.

But Courier disagrees and has Gauff ahead of Andreeva as a favourite to take the title, especially after Gauff just defeated Andreeva at the Madrid Open.
