Taylor Fritz once again came through a five-set thriller to reach the third round at Wimbledon.

Fritz overcame another big server in Gabriel Diallo but needed over three hours to do so in a match that featured everything.

The 27-year-old looked down and out in his first-round match against Giovanni Mpetshi-Perricard, but fought back to win the match, which was spread across two days.

Fritz will be looking forward to his day off today, with the American awaiting the winner of Alejandro Davidovich Fokina and Botic van de Zandschulp.

Naturally, back-to-back five-set matches aren’t easy to recover from, and that has been a hot topic of conversation among some former professionals.

Jim Courier has a possible concern about Taylor Fritz

With so much tennis being played by Fritz in the first three days of the tournament, it’s only natural for people to be sceptical.

The quarter of the draw that Fritz finds himself in has opened up, but Jim Courier believes that a more straightforward win wouldn’t go amiss in the last 32.

He said on the TC Live podcast: “I don’t think physically he is going to have problems in as far as his body breaking down, but the mental strain, I think, is pretty wearing.

“I think having a day off feels so different at a major to going to sleep the night before, thinking about the match, the next day.

“If he’s anything like we used to be, he will be relaxed tomorrow, which will be a fun day as opposed to a stressful day. It’s a recharge day, big time for him.”

Fritz should reach maiden Wimbledon semi-final

Fritz should have been on a collision course with world number three Alexander Zverev for a quarter-final date at Wimbledon, but he lost in the first round.

His conqueror, Arthur Rinderknech, is still in the draw, but Fritz has to fancy his chances of reaching his maiden semi-final at the tournament this year.

Although he could still face some potentially tricky opponents, it’s likely that Fritz will recognise the opportunity and refocus his mind during his day off today.

Last year’s quarter-finalist hasn’t kicked on thus far in 2025 since making the US Open final last year, but now Fritz has a golden opportunity to go deep at Wimbledon.
