For Taylor Fritz, this year’s first-round match at Wimbledon will live long in the memory and for all of the right reasons.
The American player fell foul of the scandalous Wimbledon curfew last night, meaning that he had to come back and finish his match with Giovanni Mpetshi-Perricard the day after it originally started.
Fritz had just won the fourth set on a tie-breaker that he trailed 5-1 at one point against the big-serving Frenchman when the tournament referee called time on things on Monday night, much to the player’s dismay.
When play resumed today, Fritz and Mpetshi-Perricard carried on in similar form, with both players smashing down several aces, before the 27-year-old got the break to get over the line and progress after recovering from two sets to love down.
And now, the US Open finalist from 2024 has a truly golden chance at this tournament!

Taylor Fritz sees Wimbledon draw open up for him
It’s hard to look too far ahead, given how competitive this tournament has looked so far, but Fritz now has a golden opportunity to reach the semis for the very first time.
Last year, Fritz looked on course for the last four but fell at the last eight stage to a rampant Lorenzo Musetti, who beat him in five sets.
In 2025, however, Fritz might never get a better chance to progress to his very first Wimbledon semi-final with the draw seriously opening up.
Fritz was all set for a quarter-final with Alexander Zverev, but his shock defeat to Arthur Rinderknech has handed the American a real chance.
It’s been a year of struggle for Fritz when it comes to the Grand Slams, but now, Wimbledon is the only thing that he will be focused on.
Who could Fritz play to reach the quarter-final at Wimbledon
After beating Mpetshi-Perricard, it’s a case of out of the frying pan and into the fire as Fritz faces Canadian star Gabriel Diallo, who also boasts a decent serve.
After that, it will be a date with either Botic van de Zandschulp or Alejandro Davidovich Fokina before a date in the last 16 against an unseeded player.
As for the quarter-final, with Zverev losing to Rinderknech, he would probably become the favourite in that little section of the draw, with number 17 seed Karen Khachanov the highest ranked player in that quarter.
All roads lead to Fritz reaching the semi-final for the very first time this year, although nothing can be taken for granted.
Still, even Fritz will know and recognise that this is a truly golden chance for him to avoid any big-name players and set up a last-four berth at an absolute canter.
