Jessica Pegula highlighted one of Rafael Nadal’s tennis records that should get more recognition.

The Spaniard has carved out an astonishing legacy in the sport and he is regarded as one of the game’s greatest ever players.

The 37-year-old has posted some staggering numbers during his career, but none more so than the number of titles he has managed to win at the French Open.

This is something World number five Pegula thinks should be recognised more in not only tennis history, but sports as a whole.

Nadal has won 22 Grand Slam titles, the second highest haul for any male player behind Novak Djokovic. 14 of those titles have come at Roland Garros, which is the record for the most number of majors won by a player at a single Grand Slam.

This is a statistic that Pegula believes should be celebrated more not just in tennis but in the world of sport.

“I am a big Rafa fan. It’s been sad the last year, because I just want him to be able to finish however he wants and on his terms,” she said during an appearance on The French Connection Podcast.

“His record at the French doesn’t get enough credit, as probably the toughest and hardest record ever in sport.

“Being able to win the French Open that many times, the most physical slam and most demanding. It’s just unbelievable.”

Nadal faces a very challenging start to his 2024 French Open campaign, which is likely to be his last.

He has been drawn to face Alexander Zverev in the first round, who is fresh off winning the Italian Open for the second time.

Ahead of their 11th meeting, Pegula, who is missing Roland Garros due to injury, mentioned this is still a nightmare draw for Zverev, even though Nadal is not in his best form.

“Terrible draw from him but also not an easy draw for Zverev!” Pegula added. “So it’s one of those where I’ve just won a tournament but I also played Nadal at the French, three out of five.”
