Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic enjoyed a short-lived coaching relationship in 2025.

Beginning their work together at the Australian Open, Djokovic reached the semifinals with Murray in his corner.

Then, at the Miami Open, Djokovic lost to Jakub Mensik in the final, as they narrowly missed out on their first title together.

Unfortunately, after a poor start to the clay-court season, Djokovic and Murray split weeks before he won the title in Geneva.

Looking back at their time together, American WTA star Jessica Pegula has shared what she heard Murray and Djokovic talking about during the Australian Open in January.

Jessica Pegula recalls conversation between Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic at the Australian Open

During the latest episode of ‘The Player’s Box Podcast’, Pegula remembered what she heard Murray and Djokovic talking about in Melbourne.

“I definitely saw them. I remember that Australia was the first event, and Novak [Djokovic] was on the bike, and he was just there talking about his court positioning and what he should do,” she said.

“I was thinking what could they possibly be talking about? Novak does everything well.

“They are so good. How!? Is this really making a difference? But it was interesting to see them interacting like that.

She also suggested why she thought Murray agreed to become Djokovic’s coach.

“I think he was so interested,” said Pegula.

“He was like This is so strange, I’m so curious why you want me to coach you, but also I am so interested in knowing how your brain works and how you are thinking out there.”

Pegula’s fellow American, Madison Keys, then shared her thoughts on the one-of-a-kind partnership.

“Andy and Novak was interesting! I don’t think we have ever really seen rivals in the same era work together,” she said.

“Wouldn’t you think it would be interesting to get an inside look at why Novak is Novak?

“Also, the fact that they were rivals, you could see what makes him tick and what the things were that helped him beat you as many times as he did.

“I think that would be an interesting insight that I obviously don’t think is really going to happen very often.”

As Keys mentioned, Murray struggled against Djokovic when they played each other on the ATP Tour, but what did their head-to-head record look like?

Murray and Djokovic played 36 matches against each other throughout their careers.

It was the Serb who ‘won’ their head-to-head, 25-11, dominating his British rival for several years.

The pair contested seven major finals between 2011 and 2016, with Djokovic winning that particular head-to-head, 5-2.

Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray’s Grand Slam final head-to-head record

Despite losing the head-to-head, Murray has fond memories of his battles with Djokovic, beating the 24-time Grand Slam champion en route to two of his three major title victories.

They met one final time at the Qatar Open in 2017, in their seventh consecutive championship match.

In three sets, Djokovic beat Murray 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 to win the title and bring their rivalry to a close.

Murray and Djokovic’s coaching relationship may not have lived up to expectations, but that won’t affect either of their legacies within the sport.
