Jasmine Paolini fell just short of a fourth WTA Tour title as she lost the Cincinnati Open final to Iga Swiatek.

Paolini defeated Coco Gauff and Barbora Krejcikova en route to the final, where she met six-time Grand Slam champion Swiatek.

And it was the Pole who emerged victorious at the WTA 1000 event, winning their Cincinnati Open final 7-5, 6-4 after one hour and 49 minutes.

Swiatek still plans to play the US Open mixed doubles despite her Cincinnati run only just coming to an end with victory over Paolini.

The new WTA number two is scheduled to play alongside ATP ace Casper Ruud in the newly revamped event in New York.

It also represents her 11th WTA 1000 title and second success of the season, having won Wimbledon last month.

She is now the second seed for the US Open, having required a win over Paolini to take over Gauff in the world rankings.

Paolini meanwhile can be hugely proud of her efforts, which should also instil the Italian with confidence heading to New York.

She’s also made the wise decision to withdraw from the mixed doubles, having just fallen in the Cincinnati Open women’s doubles semifinals alongside Errani.
