Jannik Sinner perhaps took some inspiration from Novak Djokovic during the former’s latest French Open clash.

The latter produced a superb comeback to defeat Lorenzo Musetti in the third round of the competition, with the Serb pinpointing the moment he became a ‘different player’ after the crowd gave him energy to continue as the match went on into the night.

He has now secured a fourth-round meeting with Francisco Cerundolo, with Sinner also clinching a quarter-final spot less than 24 hours later.

The Italian star was certainly forced to work hard for the victory, defeating Corentin Moutet 2-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-1.

The number two seed ended the run of the unseeded Frenchman at Roland Garros to reach the last eight for the first time since his French Open debut in 2020.

Sinner immediately had words for the crowd in Paris following the win, having perhaps expected some anger given that he eliminated the last French men’s player remaining.

But the 22-year-old, who has been tipped to make the Roland Garros semi-finals by John McEnroe, was full of praise for the fans.

“It would be strange if all of you were here for me, but it’s a big pleasure for me to play on this special court,” said Sinner, as per The Tennis Letter.

“It’s always an honour. The atmosphere has been amazing.”

It has been a fantastic showing from the young Italian so far, who dropped only his first set of the tournament against Moutet.

The match under the lights at Roland Garros threatened to get out of his control, but an assured display followed the opening set.

Sinner was calm and composed on the clay, and quickly returned to top form to secure the win in two hours and 41 minutes.

A quarter-final meeting with Grigor Dimitrov now awaits, with Sinner in with a fantastic chance of adding to his Australian Open success earlier in the year.

With the latest victory, Sinner became just the third male player after Djokovic and Rafael Nadal to win his first 10 Grand Slam matches of the season before his 23rd birthday.
