Jannik Sinner has been tipped to make the Roland Garros semi-finals by John McEnroe.

The Italian is on a quest to win the clay court Grand Slam for the first time in his career and he has reached the fourth round without dropping a set.

There was some uncertainty around the World number two when he entered the major after not playing for almost a month due to a hip injury.

But Sinner has looked rather comfortable in his opening matches so far and the McEnroe expects him to produce the best run of his career at the 2024 French Open.

Sinner began his Roland Garros campaign by defeating America’s Christopher Eubanks 6-3, 6-3, 6-4, before silencing the French crowd with a 6-4, 6-2, 6-4 win over Richard Gasquet.

The 22-year-old then took on Russia Pavel Kotov in Friday’s third round clash and won an entertaining match 6-4, 6-4, 6-4.

Sinner has impressed thus far, but he has yet to face a seeded player and that trend will continue when he plays Corentin Moutet in round four.

Given how the draw has opened up for Sinner, McEnroe expects him to at least reach the last four, which would be his best run at the French Open.

“Sinner looks to me like he will be in the semis,” the 65-year-old said. “He looks to me like he has the most favourable draw of any top ranked player.”

Sinner carved out a single break of serve in each set to claim a straight set win in two-hours and 27 minutes.

He backed up his win over Kotov in Madrid and improved his record to 31 wins and just two losses this season.

When asked about his hip injury, Sinner provided a positive update. “The hip at the moment feels good, which I’m very, very proud,” he said. “Me and my team, we made a very good job to be in the position to play here.

“The general physical shape is not where I want to be. We try to prepare my body in the best possible way. The weather today was also different. It was very cold, so it’s also different to play. The balls and the court are very heavy.”
