Alex de Minaur’s season came to an end in the semifinals of the ATP Finals after losing to Jannik Sinner.

De Minaur lost to Sinner in straight sets, 7-5, 6-2, with the Italian advancing to the title bout in Turin for the third consecutive year.

The Australian has enjoyed yet another solid campaign on the tour in 2025, finishing with a record of 56 wins and 24 losses, while also adding another ATP title to his collection.

For the second year in a row, De Minaur has finished inside the top ten, but his career high remains world number six, which he achieved in 2024.

After beating him in the final four, Sinner was asked in his post-match press conference whether or not the 26-year-old is capable of cracking the ATP top five.

The world number two said of De Minaur: “As I’ve played a lot lately against him, I feel like he has improved week after week, to be honest.

“Also, today the backhand was much stronger than maybe in Vienna. He is getting better and [becoming] a more consistent player at high levels.

Where do you think Felix Auger-Aliassime will finish the year ranked next year?

“He can now play this high level not only for half a set, but he goes basically all out. At the end of the day, top five, I think he can make it because physically he’s very, very strong. Great mentality.

“We saw it also here in this tournament: from a very tough loss, he comes back and he wins against Taylor [Fritz].

“It’s just a very mental game. Mentally, he is very, very strong. You also need to be consistent on every surface throughout the whole season. I wish him the best of luck.”

Jannik Sinner analyses his performance against Alex de Minaur

Analysing the match against De Minaur, Sinner said: “I had some break chances in the first game. I had some break chances throughout the set. He was playing some really great tennis.

“Then, on 5-All I managed to break, which gave me the confidence to raise my level, to hit from the back of the court a bit stronger also.

“I felt like the beginning of the second set was very important. When you start with a break-up straightaway, it’s a bit easier to serve, it’s a bit easier to move the ball around.

“But he came up with some great, great tennis today. I had to be very careful. The early stages of the sets are very important, as we saw today.

Sinner extended his unbeaten streak against Alex de Minaur to 13-0, having defeated him four times this season.
