Jannik Sinner overcame all of his distractions to beat Taylor Fritz in the final of the 2024 US Open at Flushing Meadows.
Sinner said it wasn’t easy ahead of the US Open, when the world number one escaped a drugs ban after twice testing positive for the banned substance clostebol.
The Italian perhaps used criticism from the likes of Nick Kyrgios to his advantage, storming to a second Grand Slam title at the US Open.
Sinner lifted the Australian Open trophy at the beginning of the year, and closed out his major season with another superb success.
Boris Becker has congratulated Sinner on his win, which came against home favourite Fritz at Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York.
Jannik Sinner makes Frances Tiafoe claim after winning the US Open
An American finalist was guaranteed at the US Open thanks to the runs of Fritz and compatriot Frances Tiafoe, who met in the semi-finals.
One aspect of the latter’s game has now come to the fore, with Sinner revealing Tiafoe’s gamesmanship on the court.
When asked by the ATP Tour on X who is the biggest trash talker, Sinner replied: “Frances, sometimes he talks.”
Sinner was then asked if he himself talks trash on the court, with the world number one simply responding: “Nah.”

Sinner perhaps felt the full force of Tiafoe’s trash talk just last month, although the former was seemingly unaffected as he beat the latter in the Cincinnati Open final.
The world number one very nearly came face-to-face with the new world number 16 once more at the US Open, but the latter was edged out by Fritz in their five-set semi-final thriller.
It is the Italian who perhaps unsurprisingly has the upper hand between the duo, boasting a 4-1 head-to-head record over Tiafoe.
That could, of course, change in favour of the American in the years to come, particularly after his superb US Open run.
At the same time, however, Sinner is in formidable form, with the Italian reaching six finals in 2024, winning all six.
