Jannik Sinner has stormed his way to the US Open title after beating Taylor Fritz in straight sets at Flushing Meadows.

Fritz thinks he’s always played well against Sinner, but the Italian was simply too strong for the American this time around.

Their US Open final ended 6-3, 6-4, 7-5 in favour of Sinner, who now has two Grand Slams to his name after winning the 2024 Australian Open.

Fritz meanwhile can be very proud of his efforts, even if he did fall well short of the world number one in Queens.

The crowd certainly wanted the American’s name on the trophy, with Andy Roddick’s 2003 US Open win the last time an American won a Grand Slam.

But Italian men don’t exactly have much history at the competition, with Sinner becoming the first Italian man to win the US Open singles title.

Six-time Grand Slam winner Boris Becker has now congratulated the world number one on the achievement, saying on X: “Forza Jannik! Your mental strength, courage and desire to be the best are the cornerstones of your success here at the US Open!

“You wrote history winning the tournament as the first Italian man! After a few difficult months where everything was at stake, your unwavering belief in the truth made the difference! BTW, I have a soft-spot for redheads… Celebrate with your loved ones and enjoy the journey!”

The pressure was undoubtedly on the world number one heading into the match, with Sinner having been the heavy favourite to come out on top.

John McEnroe told Fritz to serve big in order to make it past his opponent, but the 12th seed failed to really get going in New York.

Sinner meanwhile remained calm and composed throughout the match, drowning out the Fritz support to end his majors year just as he started it.

Back in Melbourne, the Italian was forced to come from two sets down to overcome Daniil Medvedev, but no such dramatics were needed against Fritz.

Sinner was by no means at his very best at the US Open, perhaps distracted somewhat by his recent drugs ban case, but he had enough in the tank to lift the prestigious trophy.
