Jannik Sinner equals 19-year Roger Federer record as Italy win back-to-back Davis Cups

Jannik Sinner impressed once more in the Davis Cup Finals as Italy successfully defended their title in Malaga.

Italy won the Billie Jean King Cup earlier this week, with world number four Jasmine Paolini shining brightly for the victors.

And Sinner impressed at the Davis Cup Finals, with Italy lifting the trophy once again thanks to their 2-0 win over the Netherlands.

The world number one beat Tallon Griekspoor in match two, having watched Matteo Berrettini beat Botic van de Zandschulp in match one.

It is now back-to-back Davis Cup successes for Sinner and his nation, who beat Australia by the same scoreline in last year’s final.

The Italian women meanwhile beat Slovakia 2-0 to secure their first Billie Jean King Cup title since 2013, and fifth overall.

And men’s star Sinner continued his remarkable 2024 by becoming the second men’s player in the Open Era to finish a calendar year with at least one set won in each of his seasonal matches, following in the footsteps of Roger Federer in 2005, as per OptaAce.

Jannik Sinner delighted after ‘difficult’ Davis Cup final

Italy continue to take the tennis world by storm, with Sinner the lucky and perhaps deserved man to clinch the winnin Davis Cup point.

It was, of course a team effort, but the world number one fittingly closed out in Malaga having dominated the ATP Tour this season.

The Netherlands do, however, also deserve praise for their stunning Davis Cup Finals run, having reached the final for the very time.

They stormed past Spain and Germany to make the last two, with the former comprising both Rafael Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz.

And unsurprisingly, Sinner was up against it in the final, with the Italian telling Tennis Channel after his win: “It has been amazing, very, very proud of the whole team. We are very happy to hold this trophy again.

“It was a difficult day today because everything can happen. We are very happy to be back here holding this trophy. It feels like being in Italy so we are very happy.”
