Jannik Sinner equals 16-year Novak Djokovic record after reaching the Australian Open third round

Jannik Sinner managed to avoid what would have been the biggest 2025 Australian Open upset yet by overcoming ​​Tristan Schoolkate.

Sinner won a 15th straight Grand Slam hard-court match to make the third round, where he took on the Australian on Rod Laver Arena.

Laura Robson has backed Sinner for Australian Open success, with the ATP number one the defending champion in Melbourne.

He now moves onto an Australian Open round three clash with American Marcos Giron, having come from behind to beat Schoolkate 4-6, 6-4, 6-1, 6-3.

Sinner also came from behind to win the title last year, where the fourth seed beat third seed Daniil Medvedev 3-6, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-3.

The 23-year-old ended 2024 with another Grand Slam title, with the Italian beating Taylor Fritz 6-3, 6-4, 7-5 at the US Open.

Momentum is now well and truly on his side at the Australian Open, where Sinner has just become the youngest player to record nine consecutive men’s singles wins since Novak Djokovic between 2008 and 2009, as per OptaAce.

The world number one needed two hours and 46 minutes to clinch his latest, with the match just six minutes longer than his first round victory over Nicolas Jarry.

What is Jannik Sinner’s career Grand Slam record?

Sinner does, of course, have a very, very long way to go if he is to ever catch Djokovic at the Australian Open.

The Serbian’s 10 titles in Melbourne are more than any other player, although the Italian only looks to be just getting going in his Grand Slam career.

A Wimbledon quarter-final exit was his worst Grand Slam result in 2024, with a French Open semi-final exit suffered in between his Australian Open and US Open triumphs.

His most recent season included a phenomenal eight ATP Tour titles, seven of which came on hard courts.

Again, however, his 18 career titles are a long, long way behind the 99 of Djokovic, who incidentally would be the oldest Grand Slam champion in the Open Era if he was to emerge victorious this month.

Very intriguingly, the hugely talented pair have met eight times in their ATP careers so far, with four wins each, including one for Sinner in last year’s Australian Open semi-final.
