Jannik Sinner admits what he must improve at to win the US Open after reaching the final in Cincinnati

Jannik Sinner continued his superb 2024 as he defeated Alexander Zverev to reach the Cincinnati Open final.

Sinner says his game isn’t where he wants it to be, with the fourth and final major of the year – the US Open – approaching.

Illness and injury have impacted his progress lately, although Sinner did make history in Cincinnati as he became the first Italian man to reach the semi-finals.

Sinner has now gone a step further to make the final, where he faces home favourite Frances Tiafoe, who beat Holger Rune in his semi-final.

It certainly took all of his efforts to make it past Zverev in the semis, with the Italian visibly impacted by his hip injury.

But he produced a stunning display to emerge victorious 7-6(11-9), 5-7, 7-6(7-4) in three hours and seven minutes.

There is, however, still room for improvement for Sinner, who said in his on-court interview: “It means a lot to me.

“It’s a very different moment, what I’m going through, so I’m very happy about this result. The physical aspect, of course, I have to improve, because if I want to win Grand Slams or a bigger title, I have to be, for sure, more in shape.

“But I just tried to stay there mentally, which I’m very proud [of], and let’s see what’s coming tomorrow.”

Can Jannik Sinner win the US Open?

Despite his recent issues, Sinner has enjoyed a phenomenal year, having soared to number one in the rankings earlier this summer.

He boasts a 47-5 record, and has improved his record versus Zverev to 2-4 with his latest win, having lost his past four matches against the German.

Defeating the 2021 Cincinnati champion should give Sinner plenty of confidence ahead of his final clash against Tiafoe.

But unfortunately for the Italian star, the Cincinnati crowd is likely to lean heavily towards the American ace.

A victory would be the perfect preparation for Sinner’s US Open title charge, with the world number one in with a fantastic chance of winning his second Grand Slam title.
