The ATP and WTA Tours are going back to Ohio for the 2024 Cincinnati Open, so The Tennis Gazette looks at everything you need to know about the Masters 1,000 event.
It is the 123rd time that the top men’s tennis players from around the world will contest the Cincinnati Open. It is also the 96th time that the top women’s tennis stars will fight for glory in preparation for the US Open. The final Grand Slam of 2024 follows at the close of August.
Winning the Cincinnati Open was the ideal US Open training for Novak Djokovic in 2023. The Serbian won in Ohio before going on to win his fourth title in New York. The Cincinnati Open was even the springboard that Coco Gauff needed to win her first US Open title during 2023.

Everything you need to know about the 2024 Cincinnati Open
The Cincinnati Open adopted the name of the Western and Southern Open in 2023. But it is named after the Ohio city in 2024 as the ATP and WTA Tours stage their latest Masters 1,000 events. It is still held on the same hard courts at the Lindner Family Tennis Center, however.
A different name will also go onto the men’s singles trophy after Djokovic withdrew from the 2024 Cincinnati Open. The defending champion did not offer a reason for his decision to pull out of the event. But he also skipped the Montreal Open after winning gold at the Olympics.

Predictions for the 2024 Cincinnati Open
Our team of expert writers at The Tennis Gazette predict how they think the 2024 Cincinnati Open will play out from the men’s and women’s champions to the best storylines to follow…
Callum Davies: “It will be simply impossible for the Cincinnati Open to host a final as legendary as last year’s. But I’m backing Carlos Alcaraz to go all the way this time after falling desperately short against Novak Djokovic in the 2023 Cincinnati Open final.
“The circumstances going into this year’s event are not too dissimilar from last year’s, as well. However, with it being an Olympic year, a crucial distinction has emerged.
“After all, Alcaraz has won back-to-back Wimbledon titles, beating Djokovic in the final both times, too. But in 2023, it felt like Cincinnati marked the latter’s revenge.
“In 2024, though, the Olympic gold medal match marked Djokovic’s glorious return to form, overcoming the 21-year-old Spaniard to complete his trophy cabinet.
“But with Djokovic having now dropped out of the Cincinnati Open, this opens up a fine chance for Alcaraz to return to winning ways with another Masters 1,000 title here – finally claiming the title that he came so close to winning the year earlier.”
Sammy France: “It’s the reigning Cincinnati champion Coco Gauff for me. She’ll be hungry after her disappointing Olympics campaign and with no better place to begin her US Open title defense, Gauff will run away with this one.”
Peter Lynch: “Jannik Sinner hasn’t played as much tennis as his fellow competitors lately. But he should be well rested and ready to get back to the levels he reached to win the Australian Open at the beginning of the year.
“Defending champion Coco Gauff endured a difficult time at the Olympics, but she should use that disappointment to fuel the defence of her 2023 Cincinnati Open title with the American a hard-court specialist.”
