Jack Draper has now given his verdict on the real reason why he lost to Daniil Medvedev in Indian Wells last week.

Draper beat Novak Djokovic to reach the Indian Wells quarterfinals, where he was the defending champion.

However, this is where his run came to an end, as Draper was involved in controversy with Medvedev in his 6-1, 7-5 defeat.

This hindrance incident even led to Aryna Sabalenka calling for a rule change, and now Draper has stated what he thinks is the real reason for his defeat to Medvedev.

Jack Draper admits he was ‘gassed’ against Daniil Medvedev

Indian Wells was just Draper’s second ATP tournament back after recovering from his arm injury that kept him out of action for six months until February.

Draper impressed after winning three matches at Indian Wells, and subsequently reduced the number of points he dropped from his ranking, despite losing his status as the British number one to Cameron Norrie after falling to world number 26.

However, his run did come to an end against Medvedev, and Draper has now told Sky Sports that he felt low on energy during that match.

“I think when you’ve been out injured for a while it’s not necessarily about the actual injury you had, it’s about getting your body to feeling robust enough,” said Draper.

“For instance, last week playing those intense matches, you have to back up those performances and against Daniil [Medvedev] I was completely gassed out of energy.

“If you want to win those big events you have to be able to back it up and keep going. That’s the physical aspect but for the tennis aspect the more matches you play, the more times you can get out there, and understand your game better, the more you are able to do good things.”

Jack Draper provides arm injury update ahead of the Miami Open

Although he has impressed upon his return, Draper is still in the early stages of his injury recovery and as a result there are still concerns about his arm.

Despite this, Draper has provided a positive update on his injury ahead of the Miami Open.

“I feel good. I’m happy to be here, happy to be on the practice courts,” said Draper. “I had a good week last week in Indian Wells, so as far as sort of playing in competition goes I’m in a good spot.

“I’m not quite where I want to be yet, but we’ll keep on improving and we will keep on going, and more exposure will help me.”
