Iga Swiatek’s fourth-round exit at Roland Garros marked yet another poor result in what continues to be a disappointing season by the six-time major champion’s standards.

For the first time in seven years, Swiatek failed to make it to the quarterfinals of the French Open, where she is a former four-time winner.

The Pole lost to an in-form Marta Kostyuk in round four of the clay-court major, falling in straight sets to the Ukrainian, 7-5, 6-1.

So far in 2026, Swiatek has made just one semifinal across Grand Slam and WTA 1000 competitions, which she managed at the Italian Open.

Her run of form has meant that she is now in danger of missing out on a prestigious event for the first time since 2019.

Iga Swiatek could miss out on year-end WTA Finals

Despite the fourth-round exit at the French Open, Swiatek held on to her position of third in the world, trailing Elena Rybakina and Aryna Sabalenka.

But when it comes to the race to the WTA Finals, Swiatek is not even in the top 10.

With a tally of 1823 points, Swiatek is 11th in the race to the year-end tournament, 32 points behind 10th placed Sorana Cirstea.

Only eight players qualify for the WTA Finals, which Swiatek has managed to book her place in for the last five years.

After the event was not held in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Swiatek qualified for the WTA Finals every season from 2021 to 2025, and won the title in 2023.

The last time Swiatek did not qualify was in 2019, and should she continue on the trajectory she is on, it may happen again in 2026.

Iga Swiatek could suffer a blow to her ranking during the grass swing

Things could go from bad to worse for Swiatek during the upcoming grass-court season, where she will be defending a lot of points.

Swiatek recorded an outstanding grass swing last year, reaching the Bad Homburg Open final before clinching her first Wimbledon title.

She became the first Pole to hoist a singles title at the All England Club, having beaten Amanda Anisimova in the final with a double bagel, 6-0, 6-0.

With her current form, however, Swiatek could be set to take a dip in the rankings, with the 25-year-old set to defend a total of 2325 WTA points across two tournaments.

The last woman to win consecutive singles titles at Wimbledon was Serena Williams, who went back-to-back in 2016.
