Iga Swiatek has now shared her thoughts on the new courts at the Indian Wells Masters.

There has been plenty of talk heading into the WTA 1000 tournament about the new surface that has been laid at the California venue.

After 25 years, the tournament chose to follow Miami and the US Open and use Laykold in place of Plexipave for its hard courts.

There have been several different assessments of the courts, and now the defending champion has weighed in on the topic.

Iga Swiatek offers assessment of new Indian Wells courts

The Indian Wells Masters is known for having slower courts than usually seen across the tour, in very windy conditions.

The likes of Daniil Medvedev, a two-time Indian Wells finalist, said that the new Indian Wells courts look even slower than before.

Swiatek, who is aiming to win the title for a third time, was asked for her thoughts during an interview with Tennis Channel, and she offered a different perspective.

“Here [in Indian Wells] it’s pretty similar, I would say the lines are quicker, so when the ball hits the line it’s pretty crazy, but besides that it’s still a slow court with a high bounce,” Swiatek said.

“So I wouldn’t say there’s a lot of difference. But maybe I’m just I don’t know stupid tennis wise so maybe other players feel it better, I don’t know.”

Iga Swiatek starts 2025 Indian Wells with dominant win

To the surprise of many, Swiatek has yet to win a title in 2025.

She usually claims a title in the Middle East, but her win streak in Qatar ended and she lost at the Dubai Tennis Championships. Both defeats came in the semi-finals to Jelena Ostapenko and Mirra Andreeva respectively.

Swiatek is now at Indian Wells trying to become the first woman to win three championships in the California desert.

The Pole has made a blistering start by dispatching Caroline Garcia 6-2, 6-0 in her opening match. She once again showed what an excellent front runner she is and her ruthless mindset certainly helps.

“I [was] solid no matter what the score is, and I don’t take [the] next games for granted,” Swiatek said post-match.

“If I’m leading even 4-0, I know that I should keep playing the same way and keep the same attitude to just win the match.”
