Iga Swiatek recently suffered another shock defeat as her wait for a first title of 2025 goes on.
The Polish WTA star had appeared in three semi-finals this year before travelling to Madrid, coming up short on all three occasions.
After battling through three deciding-set wars on her way to the last four, the 23-year-old’s luck ran out, as Swiatek lost to Coco Gauff, 1-6, 1-6.
Swiatek looked visibly upset at times as she suffered her worst clay court defeat since losing to Simona Halep at Roland Garros six years ago.
There isn’t long to go now until the world number two returns to the French Open, where she’ll be looking to win her fourth consecutive title.
However, it has now been revealed that Swiatek could make a shocking decision, should she fail to do so.
Iga Swiatek may skip Wimbledon if she doesn’t win the 2025 French Open
Polish site Onet has said that the five-time Major champion may choose not to play the entire grass-court season if she fails to win at Roland Garros.
“As we hear unofficially, everything will depend on the results in Rome and Paris,” they reported.
“In the event of a defeat, [Iga] Swiatek may consider giving up playing on grass, there are not many points to lose here, and use this time for a longer vacation, to return to hard courts with new strength and properly prepare for the US Open.
“But Team Swiatek will wait until the very end with this decision.”
The move would come as a surprise after her coach, Wim Fissette, spoke openly about Iga Swiatek’s grass court development at the end of the 2024 season.
“For sure, our goal is to do better on the faster surfaces,” said Fissette in November 2024.
“I think on the fast surfaces sometimes she is trying to play the game of the fast players instead of keeping to her own game and going a bit further back.
“A bit more behind the baseline and still trying to play her heavy spin balls because that’s where she is so difficult to play because she plays with so much spin, and the ball bounces off your racket.
“I feel sometimes when it goes fast, she tries to play faster than her opponent, which is not really her game, so she should stay true to herself on the faster surfaces.”
Over the coming days, Swiatek is expected to rest up before she begins her Italian Open title defence in Rome.
Swiatek beat world number one Aryna Sabalenka in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3, to win her third Italian Open title in 2024.

Seven years into her Grand Slam tennis career, Swiatek has yet to produce a stand-out performance at Wimbledon, statistically her worst-performing Major tournament.

Her best performance at SW19 came in 2023, as she reached her first Wimbledon quarterfinal.

Unfortunately for Swiatek, she failed in her bid to reach the last four, when she fell to defeat against Ukrainian star Elina Svitolina in a three-set thriller.
In 2024, Swiatek was dumped out of the competition by Kazakhstan’s Yulia Putintseva, 6-2, 1-6, 2-6, as her Wimbledon struggles continued.
Fans of the Pole would no doubt love to see her return to the event in 2025, and finally produce the tennis she is surely capable of on grass.
It remains to be seen whether or not Swiatek will choose to skip the grass court season, but it will certainly be something to watch out for.
The 2025 Wimbledon tournament is scheduled to begin on Monday, June 30.
