Terence Atmane became the talk of the tennis world last month when he broke through at the Cincinnati Open.

Advancing to the main draw via qualifying, Atmane defeated Yoshihito Nishioka, Flavio Cobolli, and Joao Fonseca to reach the fourth round.

There, Atmane took down Taylor Fritz 3-6, 7-5, 6-3, picking up the first top ten win of his career.

Securing his second in as many matches, Atmane then beat world number nine Holger Rune in straight sets to qualify for the semifinals.

He failed in his bid to reach the final, however, as Jannik Sinner ended Atmane’s run, 7-6, 6-2.

Atmane jumped into the top 100 thanks to his run to the last four at the Cincinnati Open, but how has he performed since?

After making waves in Cincinnati, Atmane was unfortunately forced to withdraw from the US Open due to a foot injury.

Updating fans on his Instagram story, the Frenchman confirmed when he planned to return to the tour.

“After a foot MRI yesterday in NY, we detected an intermediate-grade partial tearing of the medial collateral ligament of the first MTP joint. Grade two muscle injury involves the medial head of the flexor hallucis brevis. Low-grade partial tearing of the medial sesamoidal phalangeal ligament,” he said.

“Which, in other terms, [means I] won’t be able to play the US Open. I do feel sad about it because with the last result, I want to push for more, but [I’m] trying to be smart and get myself ready for Asia.

“See you guys in Chengdu.”

Returning to the tour at the Chengdu Open ATP 250 event, Atmane lost in straight sets to Croatian youngster Dino Prizmic in the first round.

He then made the trip to Beijing for the China Open, where he competed in the qualifying tournament.

Winning his two qualifying matches, Atmane advanced to the main draw, where he took on home favorite Zhang Zhizhen in round one.

Securing his first main draw win since the Cincinnati Open, Atmane dominated the Chinese star in straight sets 6-4, 6-2.

The 23-year-old will now prepare to take on either Marin Cilic or Sinner in the second round.

He’d no doubt welcome the challenge either player would provide, although Sinner would no doubt be tough to beat.

Regardless of how he performs in the second round, Atmane has already made a big step forward in Beijing.

If he were to win his next match, he could rise to as high as 55th in the world, while a shock title would see Atmane debut in the top 40.

Atmane is one of a number of French stars to have enjoyed success on the ATP Tour in 2025.

With 13 players ranked inside the world’s top 100, France is the second most successful nation after the United States (15).

Currently the ninth-best French player in men’s tennis, Atmane will be looking to jump a few of his countrymen before the end of the year.

He’ll have a chance to add some more points to his tally when he takes on Cilic or Sinner in the second round of the 2025 China Open on Saturday, September 27.
