Holger Rune is trying his best to take his game to the next level.

The 22-year-old claimed his first title since 2023 when Rune defeated Carlos Alcaraz to win the Barcelona Open in April.

Rune also reached the Indian Wells final, but British number one Jack Draper claimed a 6-2, 6-2 victory to lift the first Masters 1000 trophy of his career.

But for a large part of the past two seasons, Rune has struggled with his consistency and he has fallen out of conversations about being at the top of the ATP along with Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner.

But to try and elevate his game, Rune enlisted the help of one of tennis’ greatest players.

Holger Rune says Andre Agassi made it ‘very clear’ that he can become a Grand Slam champion

Holger Rune has yet to reach a Grand Slam final in his career. In fact, he has not progressed beyond the quarterfinals.

The Dane has shown he has what it takes to win a big title and defeat the game’s best. For example, Rune won the Barcelona Open against Alcaraz in April’s final.

But while the Spaniard and Sinner have excelled in their game over the past two seasons, Rune has stalled. As a result, Rune contacted Andre Agassi and spent three days working with him this summer.

Rune was grateful for the advice he received from the former world number one and Agassi has every faith that he will become a Grand Slam champion one day.

“Yes. He made that very clear. He knows all my goals and said they are very achievable,” Rune told The Guardian.

“But it’s more important to make it happen than just hearing it. Belief is the most important word. I believe I can do it and, I’m sure, in time I’ll make it.”

Holger Rune says he is still in contact with Andre Agassi after the time he spent coaching him

Agassi’s passion for tennis still burns bright despite being retired for almost 20 years.

He keeps a close eye on the current game and Agassi was happy to spend time with Rune, one of tennis’ best young players, to advise him on how to improve his game.

Rune shared it was his idea to reach out to Agassi and disclosed they still speak regularly, such as after his matches.

“It was my idea. I reached out to him after the French Open and thought it would be really interesting to hear his point of view on my game,” the ATP’s world number 11 said.

“We spoke on the phone for a long time and decided to do a couple of days together in DC. He sees tennis in a very unique way and had some good info on my game. We had a long dinner and the way he explained things made it simple for me to see what I can do better.

“He’s such a legend with a deep understanding of tennis and how to win. So for him to share that with me was amazing. We’re still in touch and speak after my matches on the phone and it helps to hear his thoughts.”
