Denmark’s Holger Rune failed to notch up a win at the Six Kings Slam but still took away some valuable lessons from some of the sport’s greats.

The 21-year-old burst onto the scene with a remarkable victory at the Paris Masters two years ago, where he defeated five top-10 players in succession to claim the title.

However, Holger Rune has struggled to replicate those heights since, with injuries frequently disrupting his progress and slowing his momentum.

The revolving door of Rune’s coaches has also hindered his development, as he’s yet to find a stable team to build on his early success.

In 2024, he reached the final at the Brisbane Open but fell short, leaving him still in pursuit of his first title this year.

In Paris this time, Rune couldn’t quite match his historic run of 2022. Nonetheless, several positives will be taken away with the Dane reaching the semi-finals, losing out to Alexander Zverev.

Rune’s talent remains undeniable, but he continues to seek the consistency and stability needed to break through again.

Holger Rune leaves Six Kings Slam with fresh view on Rafael Nadal’s retirement

Rune participated in the inaugural Six Kings Slam in Saudi Arabia but faced a tough opening-round loss to Carlos Alcaraz.

Despite the early exit, Rune found a valuable opportunity to train alongside Rafael Nadal, gaining insights and building rapport with the legendary player.

The experience provoked some funny observations from Rune, as he remains convinced Nadal still has untapped potential and more to prove on the tour.

Asked about whether he usually gets inspiration from other players to improve or just focuses on himself, Rune said: “A bit of both. I think inspiration is important, but I always try to be a beast, whether in training, preparing, or in a match, I always want to push myself to the limit.

“Of course, you get inspired by players like Djokovic or Rafa,” he said. “I remember training with Rafa in Riyadh, and you can be surprised: the guy is almost retired and trains with such high intensity, you think: ‘You shouldn’t retire.’

“He’s had an incredible career and has done so many things, there’s a reason they are Rafa and Novak, both give their all in every practice.”

Holger Rune proves his worth in Paris once again

Rune once again demonstrated his strength at the Paris Masters, the event where he captured his breakthrough title in 2022.

This year, he showcased his versatility by overcoming a range of opponents with contrasting styles, including the fast-paced Alex de Minaur and the unpredictable Alexander Bublik.

With these wins, Rune boosted his ranking to 11th, positioning himself just outside the top 10.

Supported by a fresh and positive coaching setup, Rune appears ready to maximize his potential in the coming season.

Paris has become a special venue for him, and as he heads into 2025, Rune is primed to build on this momentum and continue his rise.
