Holger Rune has come under fire of late for his aimless approach to the year of his tennis career.
The Danish tennis star, who was recently ranked number four in the world, has suffered through a tough run in which he has also overseen the mass upheaval of his coaching staff.
Well, Andy Roddick has actually sought to weigh in on that debate, giving his verdict whilst also revealing what seems to be happening behind the scenes.
But what advice has the former USA number one given to Rune? We take a closer look…
What Andy Roddick said about Holger Rune
This criticism has come following the 20-year-old’s recent split from Boris Becker, who signed on to coach the young superstar back in October.
However, less than five months on, the two have split, making him the second coach that Rune has parted ways with in as many months. Mark Petchey even poked fun at the rate at which he is losing coaches.
He was quick to offload Severin Luthi, who formerly worked with the legendary Roger Federer, after a disappointing showing saw the Denmark ace knocked out in the second round of the Australian Open.
Well, speaking on the Served with Andy Roddick podcast, the 41-year-old has since noted: ‘Severin goes the week after Australia, Holger lost in the second round, and then Becker goes a week later.
‘They gave the same points in their exit interview. I don’t know what he does from here. I don’t know who is interviewing.
‘But if you are a great coach right now and you are entertaining this, that has to be factored in. The fact that he has had three or four different coaches in five months tells you that there is something difficult behind the scenes.
‘Maybe we should give him the benefit of the doubt but optically on the front side of this, it seems like a bit of a mess.’
Holger Rune is wasting precious time
Despite his youth and the fact he still has his entire career ahead of him, these are precious years that he is wasting trying to nail down a set coach.
It would not matter as much if his rivals, Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz, were not flying ahead of him whilst he still searches for outside counsel.
These three were expected to uphold the next generation of tennis, and whilst it would be harsh to discount Rune, the world number seven, his recent performances have been less than impressive.
A first-round exit in the 2023 US Open. A straight sets thrashing in the Wimbledon quarter-finals against Carlos Alcaraz. A sole title throughout all of 2023.
Meanwhile, Sinner and Alcaraz already have three Grand Slams between them and are only set to keep improving.
This is an issue Rune must solve with immediacy, or else risk being left behind.
