Denmark have missed out on the Davis Cup Finals after Spain secured a stunning comeback victory, with Holger Rune losing his two singles matches.
Rune discussed Carlos Alcaraz’s decision to withdraw from the opposing team in the build-up to this qualifier.
Danish star Rune came into this match having worked on some new things following another pretty disjointed year on the tour.
However, nothing he seemed to try worked, with shock defeats coming against Pablo Carreno Busta and Pedro Martinez as form went completely out of the window.
It’s now Spain who have progressed to the final, with Alcaraz now facing a decision over whether to play in the finals or not.

Holger Rune sends classy message to Spain team after Davis Cup exit
Andre Agassi has spent some time tuning Rune up in recent months, and he’s desperate to take his game to the next level.
Rune hasn’t gone beyond the fourth round of a Grand Slam tournament this year and was beaten in the first round at Wimbledon and the second round at the US Open.
At 22-years-old, Rune does have time on his side, but after blowing a match point in his singles rubber against Martinez at the Davis Cup, he’s shared a message to the opposition on social media.
He posted: “Well deserved, Spain. We were close, but not meant to be this year. Thank you to Spain for hosting us the past days and thank you to my Denmark team mates for some great fights. And to all the amazing supporters who came to Spain and from home. Thank you.”
Rune needs help to kick on
The Danish performer is down in eleventh place in the ATP world rankings and is desperate for a breakthrough Grand Slam.
Rune has been the world number four previously, but he’s not been at such lofty heights since August 2023, shortly after he’d reached the last eight of the US Open.
For a player with so much talent to have never made it to a Grand Slam semifinal is pretty poor form, and that needs to change for him in the coming years.
Although Rune has five career titles to his name, losing to a player ranked as the world number 94 in Carreno Busta represents a really disappointing ebb.
The next few years will likely define Rune and the Grand Slam tournaments need to be much better from his perspective in 2026.
