As the 2026 ATP season gets underway, Holger Rune remains sidelined with an Achilles injury.
In October, Rune broke the proximal part of his Achilles during his semifinal match with Ugo Humbert at the Stockholm Open.
The Dane underwent successful surgery and has since been updating fans on the recovery process in posts on social media.
In a recent interview with Spanish outlet Marca, Rune has finally reflected on the moment he suffered the season-ending injury, and suggested when he plans to return to on-court training.

Holger Rune reflects on the moment he suffered the Achilles injury
“I felt like the ground was sinking, like being in the middle of an earthquake,” said Rune when describing how it happened.
“My first thought was that there was a problem with the court. It didn’t hurt; my foot just separated from my body. A really strange experience.
What is your boldest tennis prediction for 2026?
“My goal is to walk normally, without a limp. It requires a bit more calf strength than I have now, but it’s coming quickly; I feel better every day.
“The other goal is to gain overall strength and gradually prepare for February 12th, which will be four months after surgery, and that’s the next step. My goal is to be able to move around the court and look like a tennis player.
“Depending on my progress from January 12th onwards, I might be ready to do some jumps in February, like split steps. Maybe more. But we’re taking it one step at a time.”
Holger Rune’s results at Grand Slams last year
Before his injury, Rune was having a largely indifferent season on the ATP Tour; particularly at Grand Slams.
At the Australian Open, he advanced to the fourth round before being knocked out by eventual champion Jannik Sinner.

Rune made it to the fourth round again at Roland Garros, but was defeated by Sinner’s compatriot, Lorenzo Musetti.
He endured his worst Grand Slam campaign of the year at Wimbledon, where he crashed out in the first round after losing to Nicolas Jarry.
Finally, at the US Open, Rune went out in the second round when he was beaten by Jan-Lennard Struff.
