Carlos Alcaraz has positioned himself as tennis’ best player along with Jannik Sinner but Greg Rusedski the Spaniard still has areas for improvement.
The 21-year-old enjoyed some great results in 2024 such as winning the French Open and Wimbledon back-to-back and winning his first title in Asia at the China Open.
But the Spaniard has also suffered some shock defeats this year and missed time due to injury, two issues that have hampered his consistency this year.
At such a young age, Alcaraz has already achieved more than what most players do for their entire careers, but Rusedski suggests how he can achieve even more for a susatiend length of time.
In what ways does Greg Rusedski think Carlos Alcaraz needs to improve?
Carlos Alcaraz is arguably the most exciting to watch on the ATP Tour. The four-time Grand Slam winner is known for his flair combined with his wonderful array of shots and lighting speed around the court.
These qualities make him a scary proposition for all opponents, but there is something that Rusedski and some of Alcaraz’s fellow players have noticed about his game, which the 1997 US Open runner-up thinks he needs to improve.
“Alcaraz needs to get stronger. He needs to get tactically more astute at times,” Rusedski said during the Six Kings Slam preview on DAZN Sport’s YouTube channel.
“Most of the pros say that he goes for the Hollywood shot too often with the drop shot, or the magic shot where he needs to play percentage.
“But that’s why non-tennis fans love Alcaraz, because they don’t know what to expect at the biggest moments with his shot selection.”

What has Carlos Alcaraz previously said about his playing style?
Alcaraz enjoys playing with aggression and entertaining the fans with his electric strokeplay.
Though his results may not be as consistent as that of his biggest rival Jannik Sinner at the moment, he would rather win or lose going for his shots, as he alluded to after beating the World number one to win the China Open.
Back in 2021, Alcaraz commented on how he plays the game and named the player he thinks his style is most similar to.
“Honestly I don’t copy any style of a player. I just play my game. But if I have to say one player that is similar to my game, I think it’s [Roger] Federer,” Alcaraz said.
“I think similar as my game, trying to be aggressive all the time. I think it’s a good [comparison] for me.”
