Taylor Townsend has lost her first doubles match since the Australian Open in Rome.

Townsend is one of the best doubles players in the world, as the current world number two in the WTA rankings.

The American has also won two Grand Slam titles, both of which have come alongside her current partner Katerina Siniakova.

Townsend and Siniakova were hoping to win a fourth consecutive title together at the Italian Open, but suffered a surprise defeat in the semifinals.

Taylor Townsend’s 21-match winning streak ended in Rome

Townsend and Siniakova have won back-to-back-to-back titles in Indian Wells, Miami and Madrid, with their last defeat as a team coming at the Australian Open.

During this time, Townsend also won the doubles title with Storm Hunter at the ATX Open in Austin, Texas.

After reaching the semifinals in Rome, Townsend had won 21 consecutive doubles matches in a row, collecting four titles in the process.

However, Townsend’s streak has now come to an end after she and Siniakova were beaten in straight sets by the seventh seed pairing of Cristina Bucsa and Nicole Melichar-Martinez.

Despite this defeat, Townsend and Siniakova will still remain as the number one team in the WTA doubles rankings.

It is currently unclear as to whether Townsend will also be playing mixed doubles this year, but she will certainly be one of the favorites for the women’s doubles title alongside Siniakova in Paris.

Townsend has also entered the French Open singles draw directly, where she has not won a main draw match since 2018.
