Jannik Sinner’s defeat at Roland Garros shocked the tennis world.

Sinner lost to Juan Manuel Cerundolo in the second, despite being within a game of closing out the match.

The Italian was up two sets to love and 5-1 in the third, but his level dropped dramatically when he began struggling physically, and Cerundolo came back to win in five.

Sinner‘s match was the first on Court Philippe Chatrier at 12 pm that day, with the two stars playing in the brutal Parisian heat.

Many have criticised the French Open for placing the world number one in the day session; a decision tournament director Amelie Mauresmo was asked about.

Amelie Mauresmo responds when asked about Jannik Sinner

As per Tennis Actu TV, Mauresmo said: “I will never comment on TV requests, player requests.

“I never really comment on that. The players can talk about their requests and what they want. They are free to do it.

“We, as a tournament, are not going to talk about it, whether it’s TV, whether it’s players.

“So I don’t know how to give an explanation on how or why the match was at 12.

“It just seemed good for everyone,” concluded Mauresmo, who has been the French Open tournament director since December 2021.

Amelie Mauresmo discusses the French Open so far

Sinner wasn’t the only shocking upset in the first week at Roland Garros, with Novak Djokovic, Iga Swiatek, and defending champion Coco Gauff all bowing out as well.

“It’s a surprising edition,” said Mauresmo of the French Open so far. It’s an exciting addition as well.

“Every year I feel we have excitement, whether the top seeds are going through to the end of the tournament or not.

“I feel like a spectator in these Grand Slams when I witness what is going on. The favourites, if they go to the end, it’s interesting.

“If the underdogs go through, there is excitement each time. I am really looking forward to the last week of the tournament and seeing each side of the draw which happens.”

There will be a new Grand Slam champion on the men’s side, with every former major winner knocked out already.
