The 2024 Grand Slams are now in the past, but the tennis season roars on at the Wuhan Open and Shanghai Masters.

There will, however, be a few ATP and WTA eyes on the first major of 2025, which as always is the Australian Open.

Aryna Sabalenka and Jannik Sinner will be eager to defend their titles at the turn of the year, having started and ended 2024 with major titles in Australia and the US Open.

But there won’t be appearances from a handful of top players at the event, with 2024 having been filled with retirements.

Rafael Nadal is very likely to confirm his retirement soon, while his fellow icon Andy Murray has already called it a day.

Richard Gasquet confirms retirement for 2025 French Open

Murray has taken up golf after tennis, while WTA star Danielle Collins is set to follow him into retirement at the end of the season.

Former world number 19 Pablo Cuevas meanwhile retired last month, with former world number seven Richard Gasquet now one of the next to hang up his racket.

In an interview with L’Equipe, Gasquet has confirmed he will call time on his 22-year career after the 2025 French Open.

“I think that it is the best moment for me to do it,” he said. “It is the best tournament to do it. It’s magnificent, we have the chance being French to be able to stop in these kind of incredible places.

“An end, it’s always complicated, all the former great players always told me it’s not easy to announce. You never know when, how, where. Here, in any case, it is obvious.”

What is Richard Gasquet’s ATP Tour record?

Gasquet boasts 16 ATP Tour titles from his superb career, with the 38-year-old having reached a career-high rank of seventh back in the summer of 2007.

The Frenchman has since dropped to 133 in the world rankings, with three wins and 11 losses in 2024 so far.

And he will now be eyeing one last successful run on home soil, having made the quarter-finals at Roland Garros in 2016.

Gasquet’s best Grand Slam displays came with his semi-finals runs at both Wimbledon and the US Open, with a fourth round spot his best finish at the Australian Open.

The 38-year-old can be extremely proud of his efforts on the court, with Gasquet certain to receive the warmest of receptions in his final home Grand Slam next year.
