The full Australian Open main draw has now been confirmed, drawing to an end the long and arduous qualification process.
For players, this is arguably as high-stakes as it gets, with an opportunity to play on one of tennis’ biggest stages up for grabs.
However, it is not just young hopefuls seeking to secure their place at a Grand Slam; there are also established professionals, and even former Grand Slam champions, scrapping for that spot.
Frustratingly for one of those elite-level competitors, their journey at the Australian Open has already come to an end, cut short in the final round of qualifying.
Taylor Townsend loses in the final round of Australian Open qualifying
The player in question is Taylor Townsend, who enjoyed a standout year in 2025 on both the singles and doubles tours.
She actually won the Australian Open around this time last year alongside doubles partner Katerina Siniakova, before going on to reach the final of the US Open too.

It was in New York where the American enjoyed another magical singles run too, matching her best-ever run at a Grand Slam by reaching the fourth round.
And yet, despite all this obvious progress, it was Australian Storm Hunter who dumped her out in the final round of qualifying, thus ending Townsend’s hopes of another Grand Slam fairytale.
Townsend admitted she felt weird after her 2025 season, and that feeling may have now melted into frustration after this setback so early into the new year.

Were she to have qualified, Townsend would’ve been undoubtedly one of the biggest names to have emerged from qualifying, alongside compatriot Sloane Stephens.
The 32-year-old, who won the US Open in 2017, is making her return to tennis and won three straight matches for the first time since 2024 to secure her spot in the first major of the year.

Other notable stars to have qualified are Turkish talent Zeynep Sonmez, former world number 25 Anhelina Kalinina and Linda Fruhvirtova, who reached the fourth round here in Melbourne back in 2023 as a 17-year-old.
Naturally, Townsend’s focus will remain on the doubles throughout 2026.
However, she will likely hope to secure her spot in the singles draws of other elite events as the year goes on.
