Taylor Townsend has enjoyed arguably the best season of her life, and yet was left feeling somewhat indifferent as she took to social media earlier today.
After all, as is the nature of a sport like tennis, if you’re not winning tournaments, you’re losing; even if it is after a deep run.
It is that strange sensation that left the American feeling ‘weird’, ending what has been an outstanding year on a negative note following her exit from the WTA Finals in the semi-finals.
Taylor Townsend took to Instagram to elaborate on that sensation, whilst also providing an honest assessment of her last 12 months of action.
Taylor Townsend reviews her 2025 season on social media
Beginning her post, the 29-year-old stated: “It’s a weird feeling ending my best season with a loss”.
However, she rationalised her emotions by adding: “Walking off the court for the last time of 2025 saying “I wish” or “I should have” isn’t nearly what I thought would happen, but that’s sports… and also life.
“It’s not how many times you fall, but how many times you get back up.”
Townsend concluded her statement by thanking the organisers of the WTA Finals, simply writing: “Huge thank you to @wtafinalsriyadh for such a fantastic event”.
This comes after Aryna Sabalenka praised the Saudi Arabian crowd at the WTA Finals.
Remembering Taylor Townsend’s personal best-equalling singles run at the US Open
Whilst Townsend’s run to the US Open fourth round was not her first foray to that stage of a major, it did feel particularly significant.
This was especially the case given it came during the same year as one of her Grand Slam doubles titles, having already tasted elite-level silverware at the Australian Open.
In 2019, Townsend battled her way through almost every round of the US Open, even knocking out Simona Halep, before the eventual champion Bianca Andreescu halted her run.

However, this year felt a little bit more special, particularly given the controversy surrounding Jelena Ostapenko’s controversial comments about Townsend after their match.
The Latvian was one of two elite players whom she overcame alongside Mirra Andreeva, before then blowing eight match points as she somehow lost in the fourth round to Barbora Krejčíková.
It marked a disappointing end to a fairytale run, and this surprise exit from the WTA Finals has clearly had a similar impact on Townsend. She should remain supremely proud of her year regardless of such setbacks.
