Flavio Cobolli played an essential role in helping Italy win the Davis Cup for a third consecutive year.

Cobolli had a huge celebration in the Davis Cup semifinals, ripping his shirt off after winning a dramatic 32-point tie-break against Zizou Bergs to send Italy into the final.

The pressure was on his young shoulders once again in the final, with the combination of Matteo Berrettini and Cobolli sending Italy to Davis Cup victory once again.

This was the final match of Cobolli’s season, and he is now already looking ahead at what could come for him in 2026.

It has been a breakthrough season for Cobolli, with the 23-year-old recovering from an eight-match losing streak to a year-end ranking of world number 22.

Cobolli has also reached the quarterfinals of Wimbledon, and won two ATP titles this year, which enabled him to make his top 20 debut back in July.

When speaking to Italian news outlet Corriere Della Sera about his goals going forward, Cobolli revealed that he hopes to take this even further in 2026 and crack the top 10, also referencing his compatriot Jannik Sinner as a target.

“That’s something we’ll decide after the holidays, during the off-season,” said Cobolli. “I have a lot of faith in my followers, starting with my dad, so I trust them.

“I have a clear idea of ​​where I want to be: in the top 10. I don’t know when, I’m not sure how, but at this point the bar needs to be raised.

“To keep up with Jannik and the top players, I’m called upon to address my weaknesses. That doesn’t mean I feel obligated to always win, quite the opposite. Only by playing, losing, and winning can you grow.”

There was a lot of speculation about how Italy would fare this year after Sinner elected not to play the Davis Cup Finals, as well as Italian number two player Lorenzo Musetti.

This meant that the pressure rested on Cobolli’s shoulders to lead the team in Bologna, but he has now admitted that he really struggled in practice prior to winning all three of his matches in straight sets.

Cobolli was also full of praise for Sinner and all of his Italian teammates who were in Bologna supporting.

“Jannik is essential, in everything he does,” said Cobolli. “I don’t know what sparked in me in Bologna. It’s a conviction that grew along the way.

“In practice, I wasn’t playing well at all: I didn’t win a single set. Yet, day after day, a strong feeling grew, as if we had become invincible.

“Everyone played their part: [Lorenzo] Sonego didn’t miss a single set, not even to go to the bathroom, [Andrea] Vavassori and [Simone] Bolelli were cheering wildly, I supported Matteo, and Matteo ran to me after playing. It was a crazy effort, in which everyone played their fundamental part.”

The dominance of Italian tennis continues on both the men’s and women’s tours, as they have won both the Davis Cup and the Billie Jean King Cup for the past two years.

They will look to continue this success next year, but the Davis Cup has already announced a big change for 2026.
