Dominic Thiem is set to make a shock return to the tennis court so soon after his retirement.

The Austrian brought his professional career to an end following a defeat to Luciano Darderi at the Vienna Open.

Thiem was given a standing ovation by his home fans after hanging up his racket following a successful yet injury-riddled career.

But after the latest news, fans will be surprised to see Thiem return to action much sooner than they thought.

When will Dominic Thiem play tennis again?

Dominic Thiem’s professional tennis career came to an end on October 24 following his defeat at the Vienna Open.

But the 2020 US Open winner will be back on court before the end of the year, when he competes in an exhibition tournament. Thiem will feature in the Open de Caen in France, which is set to take place from December 8 to 11.

The former World number three will play Richard Gasquet, who will retire in 2025. The likes of Ugo Humbert and Cam Norrie are also set to compete.

The Open de Caen announced Thiem’s participation on X and said: “The legend THIEM at the Caen Open! We are very pleased to welcome Dominic Thiem for the first time on our court at the Caen Open.

“17 titles in his possession, including one in Master 1000 and five ATP 500.” Thiem posted a video reacting to the news that he will be playing in Caen and when he will play his first match.

“Hello everybody. Keep the date for my first participation at the Open de Caen from December 8 to 11,” he said. “I’ll be there for my first match from Monday 9, see you there!”

Dominican Thiem was part of farewell ceremony at the ATP Finals

The last time Thiem was seen at a tennis event, he was honoured at the ATP Finals in Turin.

He was honoured in a special retirement ceremony and farewell along with Ivo Karlovic, Joao Sousa and John Millman, who also called time on their careers in 2024.

They each received a token of appreciation from ATP Chairman Andrea Gaudenzi and Thiem expressed his gratitude for the gesture.

“It was a dream,” Thiem said. “I never thought I would have that great career when I was young. I never thought I would achieve that much. Standing here in Torino getting my farewell is so nice.”

He added on Instagram: “Pure emotion in Turin! Thank you to the ATP, my family, my friends, and especially to you, my fans – for all the incredible support and unforgettable memories we’ve created together. It’s been a great chapter in my life – now I’m looking forward to everything that’s to come!”
