Denis Shapovalov has been left stunned after what happened in Taylor Fritz’s first round of the Cincinnati Open.

Fritz reacted angrily at the Cincinnati Open after chair umpire Greg Allensworth made the American replay a point in the second set.

Brandon Nakashima hit a forehand long, with Fritz briefly pausing, but the duo continued playing after the ball wasn’t called out.

A handful of shots later in the rally, Allensworth stopped the play and made the decision to replay the point.

Fritz was shocked at the decision, and also at the umpire’s comments telling the player that they could have made a call on the spot had the 11th seed decided to end the point when the ball went out.

Fritz’s fellow professional Shapovalov also couldn’t believe the decision, with the Canadian taking to social media to share his shock.

Relaying what Allensworth said, Shapovalov posted on X: “If you would have stopped the point… I can’t anymore.”

Fritz then replied to the Canadian, saying: “Playing with automatic line calling and the guy wants me to stop the point man.”

Denis Shapovalov has nightmare chair umpire flashback

It was only at the beginning of this month that Shapovalov had his own controversy, having been defaulted in the Washington Open quarter-finals.

And sitting in the umpire’s chair that day was Allensworth, with the Canadian’s match ending early for allegedly directing foul language towards a spectator.

Daniil Medvedev defended Shapovalov, with the latter then winning his appeal and having his points and prize money reinstated.

Ben Shelton progressed in the quarter-final meeting, with Shapovalov then suffering a first round loss to Nakashima in the first round of the Canadian Open.

It is certainly a tough time to be a tennis umpire, with the stakes becoming increasingly high, with very little sympathy from players if an error is made.
