Coco Gauff is the new French Open champion after defeating Aryna Sabalenka in the final.

In a match which was impacted by the blustery and cloudy conditions in Paris, the 21-year-old managed her game to great effect to emerge victorious.

The American once again showed her mental toughness after coming from a set down to turn the tables on the World number one.

Gauff’s 6-7, 6-2, 6-4 victory was her sixth against Aryna Sabalenka and she has claimed her second Grand Slam title and a first on clay.

Carlos Alcaraz sends a message to Coco Gauff after she won the US Open

Coco Gauff competed in her second French Open final and was determined to have a different than her first in 2022, when she lost to Iga Swiatek.

She lost a tight first set which could have gone either way, but Gauff put it behind her and took control of the second set.

After levelling the score at a set apiece, Gauff began the third set by breaking Sabalenka’s serve, and she did not trail for the rest of the set as she successfully served for the championship.

Gauff sank to the floor and was overcome with emotion after her huge win. She received plenty of support from the crowd inside Philippe Chatrier and also from her peers.

Reigning Roland Garros champion Carlos Alcaraz, who will compete in Sunday’s final, took to X to congratulate Gauff by writing: “Many congrats @CocoGauff!!!”

Gauff’s former coach Brad Gilbert, who guided Gauff to the 2023 US Open title, wrote: “Congrats @CocoGauff winning 1st @rolandgarros, great resilience.”

Coco Gauff makes history after winning the French Open

Gauff wrote her name into the history books after winning her first French Open title.

She became the youngest player to win women’s Grand Slam titles on multiple surfaces since Maria Sharapova in 2004 and 2006.

Furthermore, Gauff is the youngest player to win the Women’s Singles title at US Open and Roland Garros since Serena Williams 2002.

Speaking of Serena, Gauff became the third American woman after the 23-time major winner and Jennifer Capriati since 1990 to win the French Open title.

This victory further establishes Gauff as the World number two and she will be in pursuit of the Sabalenka’s number one ranking as the WTA Tour heads into the summer and the grass court season.
