Jannik Sinner’s coach Darren Cahill disclosed a conversation Jannik Sinner had with Andre Agassi before the US Open final.

The 23-year-old finished the 2024 Grand Slam season by claiming victory at Flushing Meadows with a straight-sets win over Taylor Fritz.

Sinner’s US Open win was his sixth title of the 2024 season and is now the undisputed World number one after extending his lead at the top of the ATP rankings to over 4000 points.

His latest win was perhaps influenced by a chat he had with Agassi, a former two-time US Open champion.

After Sinner defeated Britain’s Jack Draper, he advanced to his first US Open final. He took on Fritz who was aiming to become the first American man to win a Grand Slam since Andy Roddick in 2003.

Sinner had the opportunity to speak to Andre Agassi before facing Fritz in the US Open final, according to coach Cahill.

Explaining what was said, the 58-year-old shared with ESPN via the ATP website: “We were talking to Andre Agassi in the locker room. He was talking about his game, and his mentality, and his composure also in the big moments.

“Even when he was tested in that third set, I still felt like he felt like he could get back into it and turn it around, which he was able to do.

“So, he’s got this champion mindset that I think a lot of players don’t have. Certain players do have it for sure. But I believe he was born with it and he loves those situations and those moments.”

After his 6-3, 6-4, 7-5 win over Fritz, Sinner gave a heartfelt speech during the trophy presentation before Agassi handed him the trophy.

Agassi, who claimed the US Open title in 1994 and 1999, beamed as he approached Sinner with the championship.

During an interview with Sky Sports, Sinner spoke of the joy of a legend and former champion giving him the title.

“It was a special moment,” Sinner began. “He had some very nice words towards me before the tournament.

“We know each other not that well but we know each other so I’m very happy to share this moment with him and obviously he knows how difficult it is to hold these kinds of trophies. So I’m very glad that he gave me the trophy in my hand so it was a very nice moment.”
