Jannik Sinner’s Darren Cahill has explained who else has played a big role in him becoming a multi-time Grand Slam champion.

2024 has certainly been the greatest season of the Italian’s career so far and there was further proof of that with his US Open title win over Taylor Fritz.

After winning January’s Australian Open, the 23-year-old became the second youngest player to win both hard court Grand Slam titles in the same season.

Having not even reached a major final before 2024 Jannik Sinner has transformed into an elite player in less than a year, and his coaching team has played a significant role in his development.

Sinner began his year by handing Novak Djokovic his first loss at the Australian Open since 2018 and he went on to win the title.

Since then the Italian has won five more titles this season and is the undisputed number one player in the world.

When discussing his rise over the past year, Cahill credited Sinner’s other coach Simone Vagnozzi for how he has helped the player iron out the errors in his game.

“I think that Simone Vagnozzi has done an amazing job over the past couple of years, working on errors of his game, both transition from defence… and to get some power on those in the corners,” Cahill told ESPN via the ATP’s website.

“But also getting back and taking the point over and transitioning into offence as well. Simone has been an amazing coach.

“He’s done a great job the past two and a half, three years. And it’s been an absolute honour to work with him and see how he’s been able to evolve Jannik’s game.”

When did Jannik Sinner start working with his current coaches?

Vagnozzi is a former tennis player and he became Sinner’s coach back in 2022.

Cahill joined the team in that same year and Sinner began to make significant improvements in 2023, during which he won his first Masters 1000 title.

He reached the final of the ATP finals at the end of the year and helped Italy win the Davis Cup for the first time since 1976. Their efforts were rewarded with the ATP 2023 Coaches of the Year award.

They have now guided him to the World number one spot and he is now a multiple time Grand Slam champion after becoming the first Italian man to win the US Open.
