Jannik Sinner’s Wimbledon campaign nearly came to an end on Monday evening as the world number one struggled on Centre Court.
During the opening game of the match, Sinner fell awkwardly on his elbow, causing him issues for the remainder of the fourth-round tie.
Even if Sinner had been 100%, he wouldn’t have had an easy time of things against Grigor Dimitrov, who played two of the best sets of his life to lead the Italian 2-0 on Centre Court.
However, just a set away from victory, disaster struck, as Dimitrov injured his pectoral muscle while leading 6-3, 7-5, 2-2, prompting him to retire from the match.

Sinner advanced to the quarterfinals, but there were still plenty of questions surrounding his fitness, with an MRI scheduled for Tuesday.
Speaking on the eve of Sinner’s quarterfinal tie, coach Darren Cahill updated fans on whether the world number one intends to play his next match.
Darren Cahill says Jannik Sinner is ‘going to be okay’ ahead of Wimbledon quarterfinal
According to reports from Tennis Now, Cahill shared how Sinner is feeling physically and revealed what they did in their most recent training session.

“We did go out to the indoor courts and just fed balls [to him] for 20-30 minutes, just to feel the ball,” he said.
“He’s going to be okay. It was just nice to get on the court.
“It’s impossible for him to take a day off.”
All signs seem to be pointing towards Sinner taking to the court for his quarterfinal match, something that looked far from certain just a few short hours ago.
When news came out that Sinner had cancelled his practice session scheduled for 4 PM, many predicted a withdrawal announcement would follow shortly after.
With those rumors put to bed, at least for now, fans can look forward to Sinner’s seventh career meeting with Ben Shelton.

The pair have already played one big Grand Slam match in 2025, as Sinner got the better of Shelton in the semi-finals of the Australian Open in January.
There’s no doubt that Shelton will be out for revenge on the grass, as he looks to qualify for his third career Grand Slam semi-final.
Only time will tell who will emerge victorious in the Wimbledon quarterfinal, but you certainly won’t want to miss any of the action when Shelton plays Sinner on Wednesday, July 9.
Jannik Sinner’s record-breaking start to Wimbledon may now come to his rescue
Advancing to the fourth round with a dominant win over Pedro Martinez, Sinner broke the record for the fewest games dropped en route to the last 16 of Wimbledon.
- 2025 Wimbledon 1R – Jannik Sinner beat Luca Nardi, 6-4, 6-3, 6-0 (7 games)
- 2025 Wimbledon 2R – Jannik Sinner beat Aleksandar Vukic, 6-1, 6-1, 6-3 (5 games)
- 2025 Wimbledon 3R – Jannik Sinner beat Pedro Martinez, 6-1, 6-3, 6-1 (5 games)
- 2025 Wimbledon 1R-3R – (17 games)
Making light work of his first three opponents, the Italian kept himself nice and fresh heading into the second week.
There, he encountered his first setback, dropping two sets to Dimitrov, but was fortunate to receive a walkover, booking his place in the quarterfinals.

Sinner now faces a tricky test against Shelton in the last eight, a test made all the more difficult by the issue with his elbow.
However, as the Italian hasn’t spent too much energy reaching this stage of the competition, he may have more in reserve to claw out a win over the world number ten.
Having played just 11 full sets of tennis at this year’s tournament, Sinner should have enough left in the tank.
The Italian will be hoping the elbow problem doesn’t hinder him too much, as he looks to return to the Wimbledon semifinals.
