Daniil Medvedev releases statement after splitting with his coach explaining reasons behind his departure

Daniil Medvedev is set to return to action at the Rotterdam Open where he was champion two years ago.

Medvedev lost to Learner Tien at the Australian Open, after playing a five set match that finished at 2:54am.

This second round defeat is Medvedev’s earliest loss at the Australian Open since 2018.

The former world number one is now turning his attention to the ATP 500 Rotterdam Open tournament, and Medvedev has already made a significant change to his setup.

Medvedev is set for a busy February, with the 2021 US Open champion entering four tournaments this month.

The 28-year-old has also split from former top 10 player Gilles Simon, who joined Medvedev’s team a year ago.

This was revealed in Medvedev’s Rotterdam press conference, with the Russian taking the positives from their partnership despite the split.

“It honestly was a good experience,” said Medvedev. “There are a lot of good things me and Gilles Cervara can take going forward. It just didn’t work out exactly the way we wanted in terms of results. We didn’t win a title or Grand Slam or something like this.

“But I learned a lot of new things about tennis and it gave me a new perspective on tennis and I’m sure it’s going to help me in the future. We will see how it will work out for the both of us. We remain with good feelings but we’re not working together anymore.”

Medvedev will still be coached by Gilles Cervara, with whom he has been partnered since 2017.

Where did Daniil Medvedev win his last title in 2023?

Despite reaching both the US Open and Australian Open finals in this time, Medvedev has not won a title since the Italian Open in May 2023.

This was Medvedev’s only title he has ever won on clay after beat Holger Rune in the Rome final.

However, Medvedev did beat Jannik Sinner last year, as one of only three players to overcome the world number one during his dominant season.

Although, Medvedev was unable to beat Sinner in the Rotterdam Open final last year, but he will not have that obstacle to overcome after the Italian withdrew from defending his title.

The world number seven faces a challenge to end his titleless drought, with Medvedev having a tough opener in Rotterdam against a fellow Grand Slam champion.
