Daniil Medvedev is off to a winning start in 2026 after emerging victorious in his opening match at the Brisbane International.

The Russian beat Marton Fucsovics in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3, to advance to the second round, where he will face Frances Tiafoe.

Medvedev remains with Thomas Johansson in 2026, whom he appointed as his new head coach after the US Open last year.

With Johansson in his corner, the former world number one enjoyed a return to form during the 2025 Asian swing.

After clinching his first victory of the new campaign, Medvedev said their player-coach relationship has been successful so far.

In his on-court interview, Medvedev said of his performance: “I played great, I’m happy with my level.

“I could have played a bit better on my serve a couple of times, but I was playing great from the baseline, so it was enough to win today. I’m happy with my first match of the year and looking forward.”

When asked about his new coach, Medvedev said: “Honestly, [it has been] great because last year when we started it was kind of a test period.

“We had an end of the season to see if it would work out or not, or if I would want to change, but it was working great, not only in terms of results, but in terms of relationship and of course, on court, we understand each other.

“We keep working hard, and it was a great pre-season, so looking forward to this season.”

Daniil Medvedev comments on Frances Tiafoe ahead of their clash

Medvedev said of his next opponent, Tiafoe: “Frances is a great player. It’s always tough to play against him.

“I’m sure he doesn’t want to play with either, so looking forward to a great match and a lot of fun.”

The two stars have played each other six times on the ATP Tour, with Medvedev leading the head-to-head 5-1.

Their last match went the way of Tiafoe, however, with the American coming out on top in their Laver Cup bout in 2024.

Every one of their matches has come on hard court, and Medvedev has won all of the outdoor meetings.
