Dan Evans heads into this week’s Davis Cup Finals as the most experienced member of the Great Britain team.

Evans feared an early US Open exit during his first round match with Karen Khachanov, but the Briton went on to win the lengthy battle.

Andy Murray loved Evans’ US Open win over Khachanov, with the victory representing the longest match in the competition’s history.

Evans edged out his opponent 6-7(6), 7-6(2), 7-6(4), 4-6, 6-4 in five hours and 35 minutes New York late last month.

He then fell to 10th seed Alex de Minaur at the US Open, with the Australian winning their third round battle 6-3, 6-7(4-7), 6-0, 6-0.

Dan Evans closes in on Andy Murray Davis Cup record

Evans’ compatriot Jack Draper then enacted revenge over De Minaur in the quarter-finals, before losing to eventual champion Jannik Sinner in the semi-finals.

Along with Draper, British number six Evans now turns his attention to the Davis Cup, where a 26th tie will see him overtake Murray in the list of most Davis Cup ties played by British players, as per the LTA website.

Discussing the potential achievement, Evans said: “It’d be an honour. Davis Cup is the biggest thing you can do for your country in this sport, and I’ve always loved representing my country.

“It’s always a very big occasion to step out with the British flag on your shirt and it’s something I don’t take for granted.

“Whether it’s my first, second, or 26th tie, I always get the same nerves and feel an immense sense of pride.”

Can Dan Evans move past Andy Murray at the Davis Cup?

Evans and his Great Britain teammates are now in Manchester ahead of the competition’s group stage event, with the side aiming to finish top of Group D.

But that won’t be an easy task, with 2022 champions Canada among their upcoming opponents in Manchester, while the British team are without Murray following his retirement.

Evans does, however, bring plenty of Davis Cup experience to the side, with the 33-year-old having made his debut 15 years ago.

The Briton boasts 16 singles and doubles wins from his 25 ties, and helped Great Britain reach last year’s Final 8.

A 26th appearance would mean Evans moves past Murray into joint-second in the all-time list with Mike Sangster, with Bobby Wilson top of the pile on 34.
