The Davis Cup qualifiers have produced plenty of drama as players compete for their respective nations.
Ties have been taking place all across the world from Canada to Japan, with the Davis Cup returning to more of its traditional format.
Some of the stars featuring at these qualifiers include Casper Ruud, Alex de Minaur, Holger Rune and Ugo Humbert, with Nick Kyrgios withdrawing from his return to the team competition.
Another player to have pulled out is Novak Djokovic, missing Serbia’s tie against Denmark in Copenhagen.
Fans slam Serbian Davis Cup team for actions after being knocked by Denmark
After day one of the tie, Serbia led Denmark by two rubbers that included Hamad Medjedovic beating world number 12 Rune.
However, the Dane’s came back on day two with avengeance and won all three remaining rubbers to complete an almighty comeback.
This concluded with 21-year-old Elmer Moller beating the aforementioned Medjedovic, resulting in huge celebrations inside the arena in the Danish capital.
During these celebrations that were posted onto social media, some fans noticed that the Serbian team had walked away from the court without shaking hands and were keen to point this out.
One person said, “Medjedovic, coach [Viktor] Troicki, and the entire team sprint off the court without a handshake after being knocked out by a mind-blowing Danish comeback. No class.”
This was echoed by multiple others who criticized the Serbian team and their captain, Troicki.
“No handshake? Classless!” one exclaimed.
Another added, “Troicki went away to the bench. Bad loser.”
Someone else said, “Disgusting lack of class from the Serbian team. Pathetic no handshake.”
The video was also responded by a message specifically highlighting the 2023 ATP Next Gen Finals champion, “Medjedovic where is your sportsmanship plssss.”
One fan calling out this situation even prompted a Serbian to admit his disappointment at their players actions.
“Notice how the Serbs did not stay to shake hands, Moller is looking everywhere to find Medjedovic to shake hands… never seen anything like this.”
“As a Serb, I found that pretty disappointing too. It is a tough loss coming from horrible doubles management, but you gotta stay for moments like this.”
What is next for Novak Djokovic and the Serbian Davis Cup team?
As a result of Serbia’s defeat to Denmark, Djokovic and Serbia will now have to wait until 2026 if they are going to add to their title from 2010.
Djokovic is prioritising representing Serbia at this stage of his career, and will get the chance to again in September.
After losing their most recent tie, Serbia will move down to World Group I, where they will play a tie in September for a chance to return to the qualifiers in 2026.
While Denmark will continue their dream run in the second round of the qualifiers against the winner of the tie between Spain and Switzerland, as they look to reach the Davis Cup Finals for the first time in their history.
This second qualifier tie will take place on the week commencing September 8 2025.
