Coco Gauff has suffered a disappointing exit from the US Open at the hands of Naomi Osaka, who won their fourth round clash.

Gauff has been told to take a break following her US Open loss, in which she was defeated 6-3, 6-2 in just 64 minutes.

Osaka produced a blistering display at Arthur Ashe Stadium to secure the win, and subsequently return to the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam.

She has now managed that feat on five occasions, going on to win the tournament every time she has previously reached that stage.

Gauff made a rapid exit from the venue in New York following the defeat, which was reminiscent of their 2019 US Open meeting.

Osaka won that third round match 6-3, 6-0, but entered their latest clash with a 2-3 head-to-head deficit after retiring hurt in their 2024 China meeting.

And Gauff referenced their previous meetings in her final press conference, in which she said: “Last time we played was in Beijing last year and she got injured.

“I don’t even remember the time before that, I don’t want to use that as an example, because we didn’t finish the match.

“I don’t even remember the time before that. She seems relaxed out there. Today she was definitely on paper the underdog, but maybe relaxed.

“I don’t know – it’s hard for me to say. But she is playing great tennis. I thought she played well. She forced me to play how I did today and I think she has improved a lot since coming back.

“Regardless of whatever form she is in, she is always a tough player and I don’t think anyone takes her for granted regardless of where her ‘form’ is, especially on hard courts.”

Osaka certainly did seem really relaxed in their latest encounter, which was in stark contrast to her opponent.

Gauff smashed her racket onto the Arthur Ashe surface amid her frustrations as she was quickly dismantled by her more experienced opponent.

Osaka is currently chasing a fifth Grand Slam title at the US Open, and a first since her 2021 Australian Open title.

But she now faces a very tough test in her New York quarterfinal, where the 23rd seed takes on 11th seed Karolina Muchova.

Fittingly, the duo each have two wins from their four WTA meetings so far, including one from Osaka at the Australian Open earlier this year.

She emerged victorious in their second round match in Melbourne, but was unfortunately forced to retire with injury in the following round.

But neither physical nor mental issues appear to be a problem for the former world number one at this moment in time.

Muchova is eyeing a maiden Grand Slam title this month, having come closest to such success at the 2023 French Open, where she lost in the final to Iga Swiatek.
