Coco Gauff was on the end of a shock defeat at the Toronto Masters yesterday, losing to Russian performer Diana Shnaider.
The 20-year-old is currently the world number 23 and although she can play it’s fair to say her career hasn’t really taken off yet.
Gauff had no answer to Shnaider during her match yesterday and was thrashed 6-4, 6-1 by the Moscow resident.
The American number one must now go back to basics and use the Cincinnati Open to really crank up her preparations for the US Open later this month.
After the match, Gauff wasn’t too defeatist but did single out one area of her game that she’s going to put extra emphasis on when she returns to the practice court.

Coco Gauff shares which shot she played really poorly in Toronto Masters defeat
Gauff normally prides herself on having a quality all-round game but against Shnaider there was one big problem.
The 2023 US Open winner will need to work on a number of things to revive her form of late but there was one shot that she feels needs urgent care and attention.
Gauff said in her press conference: “I want to go back and practice, I felt like a lot of my errors were around shots that were on my strong suit, I missed a lot of backhands today and that’s normally my stronger shot so I feel like I need to do that more.
“It’s finding the right balance of trying to rest as I know the next three or four weeks are going to be long and tough but also want to still prepare for that.”
Gauff will still provide a stern test for any opponent at US Open
The talented poster girl of American tennis perhaps isn’t in the best of form right now.
She was beaten by Emma Navarro at Wimbledon last month and lost in straight sets to Donna Vekic in the third round at the Olympics.
However, form is very much temporary and class remains permanent when it comes to Gauff’s status in the game.
Last year, the joy was etched on her face as she won the US Open and Gauff will be keen to get to Flushing Meadows once again.
The home crowd will fire Gauff up considerably and she will fancy claiming back-to-back titles on the hard courts later this month.
It’s good that Gauff seems to have pinpointed where she must improve ahead of the next tournaments and her fans will be hoping she can return to form in time for the US Open.
