Coco Gauff regrets one thing from her loss to Diana Shnaider at the Canadian Open.
The American entered the WTA 1000 tournament just a week after competing in the singles, women’s mixed doubles competitions at the Olympic Games.
Her campaign in Paris was an underwhelming one as she failed to go beyond the third round in any of her events.
Coco Gauff looked to quickly bounce back on the North American hard courts, but she was once again leaving a tournament earlier than she would have hoped.
What would Coco Gauff change about her Canadian Open performance?
After Gauff beat Wang Yafan in the opening round in Toronto, she faced Russia’s Diana Shnaider in round three, but she slumped to a 6-4, 6-1 defeat.
Shnaider broke Gauff’s serve on three occasions and did not face a break point on her own serve, while the top seed produced eight doubles faults and made just 50% of her first serves.
During her post-match press conference, Gauff expressed her regrets with one thing she did not manage to do well against her fellow 20-year-old.
“I knew I was going to go into this tired either way, that’s just how it is. Sometimes I question whether I should have played or not but at the end of the day I wanted to test myself and see how I would do being mentally a little bit and physically fatigued,” Gauff said.
“I said going into the tournament I didn’t have high expectations but I wish I could have competed better today, even if it results in a loss I don’t think I competed well.”

Was Coco Gauff impacted by the windy conditions at the Canadian Open?
Gauff’s Canadian Open campaign was ended by Shnaider who secured her first win over a top 10 player and reached the quarterfinals of a WTA 1000 event for the first time.
There were blustery conditions on centre court, which can be tricky for tennis players to handle.
But despite her poor performance, Gauff did not blame the conditions for her defeat. “It was windy but I’m from Florida so I’m used to the wind,” Gauff added.
“It makes it tricky especially playing against a lefty and she’s also a very talented player. I think she kind of knew to just stay steady because I was giving her a lot of errors.
“She normally likes to hit big when I see her play but today I was just giving her too many errors so it wasn’t necessary for her to do that.”
